We built the tool we couldn’t find anywhere else
Skiloope started in 2021 when we were engineers managing growing teams and couldn’t find a skill tracking tool that wasn’t either a giant enterprise system or a glorified spreadsheet. So we built our own.
The problem we kept running into
Most skill management tools fall into one of two traps. Enterprise platforms are powerful but require months of setup, dedicated HR staff, and budgets that only large companies can justify. Spreadsheets are flexible but break the moment your team grows past a handful of people.
Neither option made it easy for a manager to sit down, map their team’s expertise, set clear growth goals, and track progress over time. We talked to engineers, team leads, and HR managers across more than 7 companies to understand what they actually needed. The answer was always the same: something structured but simple, and something they could actually get their team to use.
What we believe
Team growth should be visible, not assumed
When skill development is structured and trackable, managers make better decisions and employees feel more confident about where they’re headed.
Complexity is a cost, not a feature
A tool your team won’t use is worse than no tool at all. We obsess over keeping Skiloope simple enough that anyone can get started in minutes.
Best practices should be shared, not hoarded
Great expertise frameworks shouldn’t live inside one company. Our template system is designed to let the best ideas spread across the community.
The team
Skiloope is built by a small team of engineers and designers with backgrounds in enterprise software and product development. We’ve worked on software for companies of all sizes — from startups to large enterprise clients — and we bring that experience into everything we build.
We’re a remote team based in Europe, and we build Skiloope because we’d want to use it ourselves.
